Gambia ranks among West Africa's best birdwatching destinations — over 600 species in an area smaller than a Dutch province. From Tendaba, kingfishers, martial eagles, bee-eaters, malachite kingfishers and herons are easily spotted along the Gambia River banks. A pirogue is the best way: you drift quietly along the shore, birds don't spook. A local guide makes the difference — they know the spots and the species.
