Route
Gambia — there and back
You leave and land at the same airfield. You ride a full loop through Gambia and Senegal. River, inland, wildlife and back to the coast.
Type
Adventurous & cultural
In Gambia you get a mix of tarmac and unpaved sand tracks. The Yamaha Ténéré is built for exactly this terrain. Riding experience required.
Total distance
±560 km over 8 days
Four riding days, averaging ±140 km per day. The longest stage is Kuntaur to Fathala, over 220 kilometers inland and just across the Senegal border. The return on day 7 is deliberately short: sixty kilometers, including the Barra ferry.
Activities are selected during booking
DAY 1Brufut
Arrival in Gambia. Our driver waits for you at Banjul International Airport. Twenty minutes later you're on the terrace of the Home Base. You stay here two nights. No rush, no schedule. Senegambia Beach is around the corner, Banjul a half hour's drive. Recover, explore the surroundings, or just sit with a cold Julbrew. The Ténéré is ready when you want to see it.
Home Base · Brufut
Daily schedule
You step off the plane, and someone's waiting in arrivals with a sign. No fuss, no hanging around. Twenty minutes later you're on the terrace of the Home Base, with a cup of coffee, a cold Julbrew, or a fresh smoothie. Depending on your flight, breakfast or dinner is ready. Local, fresh, good. Today there's no agenda, no schedule. Your XT660Z is standing by. Use the day to explore the neighbourhood, take a ride around, or just hang in the garden. Brufut is deliberately a quiet corner of the Gambia coast. Because tomorrow the riding starts.
Recommended for day 1
You've earned it. Stretch out on the quiet stretch of Bijilo Beach, or drop into a resort and order something cold. No agenda. Just recover.
meer info →Relax on the beach with a drink and fresh fish prepared the Gambian way. Kololi, right on the water.

Fitness · Boxing · Kickboxing · Padel
DAY 2Brufut
No schedule today, no route. The Ténéré is outside waiting and today you'll get to know it on Gambian asphalt. Gambian traffic has its own logic: speed bumps, donkeys, kids in flip-flops. Ride along the coast, stop at Kachikally, eat local. This is the day to get comfortable for tomorrow, the real expedition starts then.
Daily schedule
Your bike is outside. Same Yamaha you'll ride two hundred kilometers inland tomorrow. Today you take it at your own pace through the streets of Brufut, along the coast, maybe toward Bakau. No schedule. Just feel how the Ténéré handles Gambian roads. Midday you stop at Kachikally. A sacred pool fifteen minutes' ride away, crocodiles you walk past, not behind glass. Or Bijilo, where monkeys eat from your hand in a forest reserve by the sea. Dinner is local, fresh, good. Because tomorrow you're in the saddle early.
Recommended for day 2
Petting crocodiles: yes. You walk among live crocodiles and touch them (if you want to). The crocodiles are used to people, and have lived in this sacred pool for hundreds of years. They are fed fish only.

DAY 3Tendaba Camp
Your first real ride: and straight away a good one. Around 180 kilometers, nearly all smooth asphalt. First you head toward Tanji Fish Market: colorful pirogue boats on the beach, smoking fires, maybe an early catch. Then the open road inland. For the last few kilometers you leave the asphalt for a narrow, adventurous track that takes you straight to your camp on the Gambia river.
Tendaba Camp
Daily schedule
Leave early and you've got a solid stretch ahead. Coffee, bike fired up, gate open. The roads through Gambia are an experience in themselves. Busy villages, colourful stalls, people watching you pass. Real Africa, unfiltered. Around ten you stop in Tanji. The fish market is chaos: piroga boats, tuna and shouting. Loud, colourful and genuinely authentic. Quarter hour looking, taking pictures, moving on. Then the road again. In the final kilometres you dive into the bush, sand tracks winding toward the river. Adventurous, fragrant, green. Then camp. Tendaba isn't a resort, that's right. It's a camp on the river: simple, green, quiet. Power cuts happen, it comes with the territory. But after 180 kilometres on the bike you just want to sit. There's beer. There's food. There's evening light on the water. That's more than enough.
Aangeraden
The busiest fish market in Gambia. Pirogues full of tuna arriving early morning, men hauling crates, ice, fisherwomen selling. Raw, real and loud.
meer info →Pirogue from the camp, out onto the river. Birdwatching along the banks, crocodiles floating in the water, hippos in the distance. The river landscape at its finest.

DAY 4Kuntaur — Baboon Island
The ride from Tendaba to Kuntaur takes you deeper inland. The Gambia river narrows here, less wide, fewer tourists, more wildlife. Kairoh Garden sits right on the water. In the evening you hear the river. The next morning you board a small boat early.
Kairoh Garden · Kuntaur
Daily schedule
Closer than you think
At the coast the Gambia river is wide and slow. Here, in the heart of the country, it narrows. Chimpanzees are visible on the island shores, hippos emerge from the water, heads above the surface, eyes that follow you. Crocodiles lie on the sandbars. Nature here is rawer, quieter and more intense. No other boat in sight. Only the sound of water.
Aangeraden

DAY 5Fathala Wildlife Reserve
From Kuntaur you ride deeper into the interior, already on the north side of the river, no crossing needed. The road runs toward the Senegalese border at Karang. Two hundred kilometers through the heartland of Gambia and just across the border.
Fathala Wildlife Reserve
Daily schedule
The longest stage of the expedition. Two hundred kilometers, mostly asphalt, but more intense as the border approaches. You depart from Kuntaur, already at the northern shore. The road winds through villages where your bike draws attention. Then the border crossing at Karang. Wait, stamp, ride. Once you enter Senegal the landscape shifts: fewer houses, more red sand. Then the gate of the reserve.
Aangeraden

Daily schedule
Sixty kilometers. The shortest day of the ride, and perhaps the finest. You leave Fathala early, ride through Senegal and reach the final border stamp of the expedition. Barra is quiet. The ferry departs when it departs. You cut the engine, lean against the rail and watch the Gambia river slip past. Thirty minutes of nothing but watching and letting it settle. Eight days.
